Brighton, East Sussex

Growing with the population

Key Facts

  • Sustainable – solar panels, electric vehicle charging, air-source heat pumps
  • Tricky city-centre expansion
  • Numerous operators on site
  • Floor area: 1450 sq m plus pharmacy
  • 20,000 patients

In Brighton, a growing population and a practice merger called for a new medical centre to meet the needs of 20,000 patients. We negotiated the purchase of a council-owned car park behind the existing surgery, which allowed for the significant surgery expansion required.

After NHS Full Business Case approval, we got existing and prospective occupiers (two GP practices, a mental health NHS Trust and a pharmacy) on board and appointed building contractors.

The new surgery will be a huge upgrade and even comes with a balcony off the staffroom. It’s sustainable, too, with solar panels, air-source heat pumps, EV charging and a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Phase 1 of the building is now complete. Staff have moved into the new premises while we demolish and rebuild the old building. When complete, the surgery’s floor area will increase from 450 sq m to 1,450 sq m plus the pharmacy.
