Gillbrae Medical Practice, DumfriesThis recently completed new development for a 9 GP Practice with attached staff replaces cramped, dark and out of date town centre premises without parking. The new building, developed on the fringe of school playing fields forms part of a group of local community facilities, including 2 schools, library and the new medical centre. Access for pedestrians, public transport or car is easy, there is lots of parking. The architecture aims to marry form and function into a pleasing harmony. The public areas are bright, colourful contemporary spaces designed to feel spacious and open. This is enhanced by high level ceilings and natural light, promoting a therapeutic environment for patients and staff. Public areas are easily supervised from reception which has excellent visibility over waiting areas, corridors and interview rooms. The staff accommodation is designed to stimulate and encourage inter-action and teamwork and includes a comfortable double aspect staff area, opening onto a south facing balcony.
